Abstract

The kinetics of the stress-induced transition from the β- to the incommensurate phase in quartz has been investigated by time-resolved triple-axis spectroscopy. It is shown that the formation of the modulated phase under external load takes a longer time than the removal of the modulation if the stress is released. Moreover, the time dependence of the soft phonon is studied on a time scale of seconds.
