Abstract

Low-spin deviations in the transition energies of identical superdeformed bands in Hg nuclei are discussed in terms of variations in the moments of inertia. Blocking arguments are used to predict differences in the static pair correlations at low spins. Consequently, it is suggested that the excited two-quasiparticle superdeformed bands in 194Hg provide a good reference for the superdeformed bands in this region. A simple expression relating the moment of inertia to pair correlations is then used to estimate the relative magnitude of the neutron pairing within these nuclei.
