Abstract

Experiments of columnar grain growth in UO 2 pellets prepared with and without organic additions were performed. The gases originated by organic pyrolysis and contained in closed porosity have an inhibition effect in columnar grain growth. Grain boundary migration mechanism is responsible for columnar grain growth when steep temperature gradient is applied. Poor columnar grain growth and circular voids occur in experiments with central fused uranium dioxide.
