Abstract

In the new approximate Hamiltonian for exchange interaction of two Hund’s rule atoms (which has been derived from first principles with the aid of Girardeau’s second quantization representation for composite particles2) the first and the second term associated with the exchange of one and two pairs of electrons respectively, are studied in the case of atomic spin one. The aim of the study was to investigate whether two‐pair exchange effects can affect the value of the two‐atom ground state spin. The answer to the above question is affirmative. In fact, in the ground state of two Hund’s rule atoms, each having spin one, apart from the values two and zero (these are the only possible values in the ground state of two atoms in the Heisenberg theory which comprises one‐pair exchange effecs only) the value one is available in the ground state if two‐par exchange effects can not be neglected. It has been suggested that this result may be used to account for the fact that the mean magnetic moment per atom in mag...
