Abstract

The influence of the local coordination ions on the optical properties of Eu 3+ in fluoro-chloride glasses has been investigated by means of fluorescence line-narrowing spectroscopy. The decay of the line-narrowed fluorescence of the 5D 0 → 7F 2 hypersensitive transition, the line width of the line narrowed 5D 0 → 7F 0 emission, and the average strength of the crystal field measured as a function of excitation energy along the 7F 0 → 5D 0 absorption can be interpreted as indicating a crossover between the behaviour of fluorine-like and chlorine-like coordination anions.
