Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of rearing broilers in windowless houses versus open-type houses on pigmentation. In addition, data from five previous experiments conducted on broiler pigmentation were analyzed according to the pen positions of the birds to compare the pigmentation of broilers exposed to different light intensities.Broilers raised with constant low intensity lighting in the windowless houses, exhibited a significantly lower dominant wavelength (less orange) than birds reared in open-type houses. With a natural diurnal light cycle present, broilers reared in pens along open walls had a higher dominant wavelength (more orange) than broilers reared in interior pens where light intensity was lower. These results indicate that light affects broiler pigmentation.
