Abstract

In the last few years there has been increased use of barbiturates in very high doses to treat a variety of neurosurgical disorders associated with cerebral ischaemia (12, 17), brain swelling, and intracranial hypertension (21–23, 25, 28). There are two questions that have developed regarding the practical application of this form of treatment. The first relates to techniques for regulating the dose of barbiturates, and the second relates to the role of hyperventilation in patients receiving treatment with high doses of barbiturates.
