Abstract

1) We studied the erect of heparin and polyran T, a dextran sulfate, on the proliferation and migration of arterial smooth muscle cells in culture.2) Heparin inhibited the migration and proliferation of smooth muscle cells dose-dependently.3) The inhibitory effect of heparin on smooth muscle cell migration was partially antagonized by protamine sulfate.4) Polyran T had a similar effect on the proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells.5) The present study suggests that anti-atherogenicity of heparin might be not only due to the anti-coagulative and lipemia-clearing effect, but also due to the inhibitory effect on the migration and proliferation of arterial smooth muscle cells.
