Abstract

In this paper singular temperatures of the martensitic transformation are compared between polycrystals and single crystals for the same chemical composition. Forty four different Cu/1bZn/1bAl shape memory alloys have been studied for that purpose. The influence of grain boundaries encourages the transformation and hampers the retransformation. The interaction of the grain boundaries with the martensitic plates produces an increase in the local elastic energy which facilitates the nucleation of new plates.
