Abstract
1. 1. Pyruvate kinase of rat, mouse, pig and chicken tissues has been investigated with regard to the influence of fructose-1,6-diphosphate (FDP) on the activity of the enzyme. 2. 2. For all species studied, the liver enzyme was markedly stimulated by FDP whereas the muscle enzyme was insensitive to FDP. 3. 3. Rat, mouse and pig adipose tissue pyruvate kinase activity was not stimulated by FDP. The chicken adipose tissue enzyme was, however, markedly stimulated by FDP. 4. 4. FDP sensitivity of the liver pyruvate kinase of all species studied and of the chicken adipose tissue enzyme could be related to a decrease in the K m for phosphoenolpyruvate in the presence of FDP. 5. 5. The possible physiological significance of these findings is discussed.
