Abstract

This chapter explores the turbulent environment in which journalists and scholars find themselves today, and the impact of fake news on the credibility of journalism. It addresses current political, social, and cultural issues influencing the practice of media and communication. I argue that fake news in the 21st century is distinguished by the technologies that allow it to mimic legitimate journalism and be disseminated globally without barriers. When unpacking the significance of fake news as it exists today, two elements must be examined: fake news as misrepresentation and fake news as an attack on journalists. The chapter ends with a consideration of journalism can best take on this phenomenon to combat fake news while continuing to engage in ethical practice that upholds long-standing principles and values. Journalists must engage in good reporting that includes multiple viewpoints and supported claims while also honestly critiquing so-called objective journalism. Business as usual by journalists is part of the problem.
