Abstract

Summary A study was conducted with young dairy calves on the effect of energy intake on the efficiency of protein utilization as measured by nitrogen balance. It was shown that on a low protein intake an increase in non-nitrogenous TDN consumption resulted in a marked increase in the retention of the nitrogen available for growth. The findings with the young growing calf are in accord with the results with the adult dog, rat, mouse and man and growing mice and rats.
