Abstract

The optical potential for the elastic scattering of a pair of heavy ions may contain a Majorana component, in both its real and imaginary parts. A simple argument is advanced which indicates that such a component is to be expected whenever the difference between the masses of the two nuclei is a small fraction of the mass of either one.
