Abstract

Vehicle stability control system of electric vehicle keeps vehicle stability by controlling longitudinal force of the driving wheels. So handling stability should be taken into consideration when deciding the driving axle (front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive) for electric vehicle. In this paper, yaw moment generation capability of front axle and rear axle in in-wheel-motor electric vehicle has been analyzed. According to the analysis with simplified vehicle model, front axle can generate outward yaw moment more effectively, while rear axle is more effective in generating inward yaw moment. To further evaluate the handling stability of the in-wheel-motor electric vehicles in two different driving forms, two simulation tests (double lane change test and pylon course slalom test) have been done. The tests results show that front-wheel-drive electric vehicle with stability control can follow the desired trajectory significantly better than rear-wheel-drive vehicle with stability control.
