Abstract

In recent years, the composite index (CI) has become the main tool for assessing road safety. CI is aggregated value of a number of different safety indicators. Essential pre-aggregation step that greatly affects the results is weighting of indicators. Many authors deal with this subject, however, so far no agreement about specific methodology for this process has been reached. The main aim of this paper is to contribute to previous efforts by expanding the list of compared weighting methodologies in the field of road safety index construction. Theoretical consideration and application of selected methods, namely equal weighting, experts’ opinion, entropy, grey relational analysis (GRA), and data envelopment analysis (DEA) with optimal weights, will be presented. Results will show that different method produces different ranking and given comparison will facilitate the selection of a justifiable method.
