Abstract

The theory of ion transport through the multi-sited single-file potassium channel is developed. The graph technique is used for calculation. It was shown that the typical second power for the ratio of unidirectional fluxes in a potassium channel, which has been experimentally established by Hodgkin and Keynes, 1 depends on the effective ion population but not on the number of sites in the channel. Therefore to arrive to the second power in this ratio, the channel must be effectively populated by two ions which can be provided by COULOMB interaction between the ions in the multi-sited channel.
