Abstract
Abstract This article discusses the causes and nature of certain systematic and predictable errors in human judgment and decision making, which cognitive psychologists refer to as “cognitive biases,” and considers their influence on biblical interpretation. Five key cognitive biases (confirmation bias, false consensus effect, in-group bias, functional fixedness, and the illusory truth effect) are discussed, along with proposals for how each of these may skew an individual’s interpretation of the biblical text. The article concludes with an identification of a number of methods, strategies and considerations that may help to reduce the influence of these biases.
