Abstract

The influence of twenty-five different rootstocks upon the amount and type of volatile oils in the rind of Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis) has been investigated. The amount of oil production is probably influenced more than the individual oil components. There was no significant effect of rootstocks on a-pinene, d-limonene, p-cymene, 2-methyl-2 heptanone, and octyl acetate. However, β-myrcene, decanal, and linalool were significantly affected by rootstocks and could be grouped. These rootstock groupings had no correlation with the accepted botanical relationships. There do not appear to be any rootstock differences of such magnitude that their effect on the oil components would be of taxonomic significance.
