Abstract

The corrosion and electrochemical behaviour of stainless steel in H 2SO 4 in the presence and absence of various concentrations of chloride ions were investigated. Analysis of the results indicates that chloride ions adsorbed on the metal surface inhibit the dissolution reaction in 10 N H 2SO 4. At lower H 2SO 4 concentrations the chloride ions accelerate the dissolution rate as a result of the formation of pits on the metal surface film.
