Abstract

In order to document the effect of bronchitis and asthma in infancy and early childhood on subsequent lung function, a prospective study of the lung function of a random sample of Sydney schoolchildren was begun in 1971. At the first study, a parental questionnaire was used to obtain a history of previous asthma and bronchitis, severe enough to require treatment by a medical practitioner. Maximal expiratory flow volume (MEFV) curves were recorded with a Fleisch no. 3 pneumotachograph onto magnetic tape.
