Abstract

A prospective study comparing the blood pressure of 21 breast feeding mothers with 21 mothers who were bottle feeding their baby was carried out on the fourth postnatal day. The aim of the study was to establish whether breast feeding had any influence on blood pressure in the immediate postnatal period. Although systolic blood pressure tended to be higher in the breast feeding group the difference did not reach statistical significance. We concluded that breast feeding has no significant effect on blood pressure in the early postnatal days.
