Abstract

When the sucrose concentration in the culture medium used for the growth of cell suspension cultures of spinach was at 2.5 mg/ml or higher, chlorophyll synthesis was inhibited. Other readily utilisable sugars (glucose, fructose, maltose) in contrast to slowly utilised sugars (inulin, raffinose) similarly inhibited chlorophyll synthesis. Analysis of the spent medium suggests the absence of appreciable free-space invertase activity. Measurement of the oxygen exchange rates of the cells in light and in darkness indicated that applied sucrose, in contrast to its monosaccharide components, directly inhibited photosynthesis or promoted photorespiration.
