Abstract

The nucleation and growth characteristics of gold crystallites deposited in the presence of an electrical discharge were investigated. It was found that the number density of Au crystallites deposited onto (100) cleaved faces of NaCl had a direct relationship with the length of application of the discharge. As the discharge time increased, the crystallite diameter distributions showed an evolution from a broad to a narrow character. It was also found that the presence of a discharge during deposition enhanced the tendency towards epitaxy and the formation of preferred surface orientation for the crystallites.
