Abstract

The terminal solubility of hydrogen in the α-phase of binary alloys of zirconium with niobium, titanium, hafnium, yttrium, indium, lead, antimony and oxygen was examined by means of hydrogen pressure-concentration isotherms above the eutectoid temperature and a dilatometric technique below. The solubility above the eutectoid temperature was found to be increased by the presence of β-stabilising elements and decreased by α-stabilisers. Below the eutectoid temperature however, alloying additions, even when present in considerable quantity in solid solution, do not have any significant effect on the terminal solubility of hydrogen in α-zirconium which can be represented by the equation C T ( ppm) = 4.4×10 5 exp ( −10660 RT )
