Abstract

authors of this note reDort on the results of an interesting study of the effect of aging on the conventional +' and c' effective stress shear strength parameters of two clays. They reach the conclusion that aging caused a dramatic increase in initial tangent modulus and a significant increase in undrained strength. But perhaps more important, they also concluded that the aging increased the failure +' and decreased the failure c'. This conclusion sits in sharp contrast to the Bjerrum and Lo (1963) reference work used by the authors. These previous researchers concluded that the Hvorslev effective cohesion increased with aging. authors should find the paper The Shear Behavior of Soil with Constant Structure by this discusser (1976) of some interest concerning the more fundamental clay behavior that occurs as a result of aging. This reference demonstrates in considerable
