Abstract

Native plants of Lotus purshianus (Benth.) Clem. et Clem. are diploid (2 n =14), lack vigor and produce limited seed. Tetraploid (2 n =28) plants have been produced, and the procedure for their induction has been described. The counting of chloroplasts in guard cells is recommended as an excellent means for the initial separation of diploid and tetraploid plants following colchicine treatment. Tetraploids were verified by chromosome number determination from root-tips cells.
