Abstract

The Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI) is an instrument to measure students’ attitudes in the chemistry-related subject. Bauer developed it in 2008, and the Bretz team adapted the shortened version in 2011. ASCI helps measure intellectual accessibility and emotional satisfaction toward chemistry. The short version of the ASCI (ASCI v.2) only assessed two factors: intellectual accessibility and participants’ emotional satisfaction with chemistry. ASCI v.2 is a short version of ASCI that contains eight semantic differential statements in English. Short ASCI v.2 can help educators in Indonesia to monitor the attitude of high school and college students towards chemistry. Bahasa Indonesia is the primary language of instruction in Indonesia. Therefore ASCI v.2 as an instrument would be useful if it is in the Indonesian language. The purpose of this study is to validate and determine the reliability of ASCI v.2- Indonesia. The team utilized the corrected item-total correlation statistical technique with a correlation (r) limits of 0.3 for the validity test and coefficient Cronbach's Alpha for the reliability test. The results showed there were two invalid items, namely item 4 and item 8. However, other items are valid and reliable, with r values above 0.3 and Cronbach's Alpha above 0.7. Therefore, educators in Indonesia can administer this ASCI v2-Indonesia by subtracting two items. Further research in the ASCI v2-Indonesia implementation within various chemical-related subjects in high schools and colleges would be the next agenda.
