Abstract

The Indian Star Tortoise Geochelone elegans is under severe pressure due to threats to habitat, population and from national and international threats. The species is assessed as Vulnerable in both India and Sri Lanka, yet manages no high protection in the legislation of the country. The paper also highlights the need for a better role of zoos in India for the conservation of the species.
