Abstract
The first volume of the Index of Middle English Prose appeared in 1984. Twenty volumes have now been published (three written by the present author) and several are in preparation. The series identifies and describes English prose texts in medieval manuscripts written between 1200 and 1500, collection by collection. This article sketches the background against which the series was planned, attempts to identify its achievements and shortcomings, and suggests some potential improvements.
