Abstract

This chapter considers the health and social issues that occurred in the prefecture, including disaster-related deaths and the legal problems associated with the disaster. The Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear accident ended even more lives through disaster-related deaths. There were many other legal issues which came about in Fukushima Prefecture following the disaster. Those who have been lost to disaster-related deaths could potentially have been saved by improvement of the environment at evacuation destinations, appropriate medical care, and help at evacuation destinations. In order for the bereaved families to receive appropriate compensation for disaster-related deaths, it is necessary to prove that there is a causal relationship between evacuation from the nuclear accident and the cause of death. Most of this compensation was paid to a limited number of Fukushima residents and businesses who resided in the evacuation order area near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
