Abstract

Abstract Data from a survey of the forty-nine state Houses of Representatives display congruence between women and men legislators' social, occupational, and political backgrounds. These data also indicate that in proportion to their numbers in the professional state legislatures women have achieved parity with men in leadership and power committee positions, while in the citizen legislatures women have achieved near parity on these matters.
