Abstract
Summary 1.In a follow-up study of 175 blood recipients in five hospitals in Japan, 113 (64.5 per cent) developed viral hepatitis as diagnosed by serum glutamic-pyruvic trans-aminase elevations. The diagnosis was confirmed in 10 patients by liver biopsy. 2.The incidence of hepatitis was directly related to the amount of blood received. 3.This study supports the belief that the majority of viral hepatitis patients remain anicteric, as only 1 in 10 developed clinical jaundice.
