Abstract

Objective To explore the occurrence of hypertension and heart damage of obese children. Methods We selected 516 cases of obese children as obese group, hospitalized from Jul 2008 to Oct 2010 in Shenyang Children's Hospital. We also selected 100 cases of normal weight children as control group at the same time. All enrolled children were measured blood pressure, cardiac ultrasound routinely. Results The systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure of obese group were higher than those of control group (P < 0.05),the prevalence of hypertension of the obese group was 3.88 % (20/516).The left ventricular systolic function of all enrolled children were normal, the average thickness of 22 cases of the obese group whose left ventricular wall were thickened, was (0.93 ± 0.07) cm,and compared with the control group, the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05).The left ventricular wall of 19 cases of obese children with hypertension were thickened, and that of 3 cases of obesity with normal blood pressure were thickened, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05).The epicardial fat thickness of obese group was (3.372 ± 0.098) mm,compared with the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.001).Conclusion The risk of hypertension in obese children was higher than non-obese children; obese children's epicardial fat thickness was significantly higher than normal weight children;the left ventricular wall of obese children combined with hypertension was thickening than that of normal blood pressure children. Key words: Obesity; Metabolic syndrome; Hypertension; Left ventricular hypertrophy; Epicardial fat thickness
