Abstract

Thirteen episodes of central vein thrombosis (CVT) developed during 77 courses of parenteral nutrition in 62 patients (incidence 16.8%). CVT occurred in 11 of 43 courses (25.6%) in which dextrose was the single non-protein energy source, but only one of 26 courses (3.8%) with lipid containing 3 in 1 mixes. (P < 0.05). CVT was successfully treated in five patients with streptokinase and heparin permitting reintroduction of parenteral nutrition without further complications. It is concluded that the development of CVT may be influenced by the type of nutrient solution and effective treatment is available.
