Abstract

Cytochrome oxidase has been shown to mediate oxygen uptake in young, intact leaves of barley, carrot, and spinach, using the criterion of light reversal of carbon monoxide inhibition of respiration. The problem of oxygen evolution by photosynthesis during the period of light reversal was circumvented by the use of isotopic oxygen and a recording mass spectrometer to determine the rate of respiration.
