Abstract

The sex of the host hamster influences the number of polynucleated cells in a hamster ascites tumor. Normal male hamsters had more polynucleated tumor cells than normal female hamsters. Castrated hamsters of both sexes had high multinucleated cell numbers. Hormone therapy using estrone in castrated male and female hamsters resulted in a low number of polynucleated cells. Testosterone had no effect on castrated male hamsters but lowered polynucleated tumor cell numbers in castrated female hamsters. In vitro experiments confirmed the effect of estrone (lowering polynucleated cells) on the hamster ascites tumor.
