Abstract

The in vitro conversion of the female sex steroid, oestrone, to oestradiol-17β in normal and inflamed human gingiva was demonstrated. Little, if any, oestradiol-17β was converted to oestrone. The average rate of conversion of oestrone to oestradiol-17β in normal and inflamed gingiva was 6·8 × 10 −7 and 19·4 × 10 −7 μM/g/min respectively.
