Abstract

Advances in taxonomy have parelleled those in other areas of biology but the topic does not have a prominent place in A-level teaching at present. The requirements of examination boards, as shown by their syllabuses and examinations, clearly influence the place of taxonomy in A-level biological studies. This may be compared with some important modern principles, techniques, and current terminology. The attitudes and practices of teachers and the characteristics of this topic which justify its inclusion in biology syllabuses are examined and the teaching of taxonomy at A-level as investigatory science with interesting concepts which may be explored in a practical manner is considered.
