Abstract
Over my career as a nurse, midwife, nurse tutor and academic in two universities in Ireland, during which time I was appointed head of the school of nursing in University College Dublin where I managed the entry of nursing and midwifery students into academia, in 2001. This heralded a change in nurse teaching from schools of nursing based in hospitals to university education.
