Abstract
The stability of valley slopes at dam sites must be considered and observed during the preparation, construction and operation of the structure. Large landslides may obstruct a mountain valley thus giving rise to temporary lakes, which usually vanish after the water has overflown the natural dam. The constricted cross-section of the valley seemingly provides a suitable dam site. In some cases the slid masses were used intentionally as part of the dam body, but increased attention had to be paid to the properties of the slid material.
