Abstract

The criteria to be followed in the choice of an unbiased sample of dwellings to evaluate both the concentration of indoor radon and its distribution are described. Radon, when compared with other indoor pollutants and other radiation sources, shows a great variability in space and time. This is the reason why, in the national surveys (second generation surveys) undertaken in recent years, a representative sample of dwellings was chosen. ENEA/DISP and Instituto Superiore di Sanita, in planning the national survey in Italy, kept in mind these considerations and adopted a two-stage stratified sampling technique. In the first stage the administrative units stratified according to the 21 Italian administrative districts and to the population size are randomly selected. In the second one the dwellings are chosen. The manpower and costs allowed the investigation of 5000 houses distributed in 200 administrative units.
