Abstract

AD is a devastating disorder that is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed in its early stages. A recent projection suggests that 1.8 million people in the United States may have unrecognized dementia and are not receiving medical care and services. Barriers to early diagnosis of AD include failure of family or physicians to recognize the existence or importance of changes in cognition, behavioral symptoms, and performance of activities of daily living; misdiagnosis; and/or misperceptions regarding management issues.
