Abstract

Introduced in 2002, Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) was by far the most controversial of the examinations administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). In 2020, the NBME suspended the examination due the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021, it announced that the examination would be permanently discontinued (1). The demise of Step 2 CS raises important questions that every radiologist with an interest in professional certification, and especially academic radiologists, should take a keen interest in.
