Abstract

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) became the Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands on April 2nd 2012. The use of experienced nurses to provide good communication and co-ordination in trauma has been shown to be a key factor in providing better patient care and achievement of best practice tariffs. The role of Major Trauma Case Manager is a new one in the UK and is probably the first nursing role that follows the patient throughout the full pathway of major trauma from initial resuscitation in ED to rehabilitation and home. The Major Trauma Case Manager is very important in orthopaedics as the majority of trauma patients have orthopaedic injuries and it is these injuries that lead to extended hospital stays and rehabilitation.
