Abstract

Objective. Rehabilitation after laryngectomy often includes the use of a shunt valve and a tracheostoma valve to restore voice. To improve the fixation method of these valves, a new tissue connector (TC) has been developed. 1 Materials and methods. The TC consists of a quarter of a titanium ring fixed to a polypropylene mesh. In the first series of four goats, polypropylene mesh was implanted around the trachea. In the second series, the complete TC was implanted in the trachea with the titanium rig penetrating the trachea. All TCs were removed after 12 weeks. Results. No infection or severe inflammation reaction was detected. The spaces in the polypropylene mesh were filled with soft tissue in both series. In the second series, the titanium ring was overgrown with mucosal tissue in three of the four goats. Conclusion. The TC seems appropriate for its intended use, but more research is necessary to prevent mucosal overgrowth.
