Abstract

Abstract Currently, 39 chemicals are registered or approved for use in freshwater and marine aquaculture. In addition, eight chemicals have been identified as the therapeutants in greatest need of registration: (1) a replacement for malachite green, (2) oxolinic acid, (3) chloramine-T, (4) erythromycin, (5) oxytetracycline for lobsters, (6) formalin (formaldehyde solution) for penaeid shrimp, (7) ethyl aminobenzoate (benzocaine), and (8) streptomycin. Registration work has been completed for oxytetracycline and is in various stages of progress for the other chemicals, except streptomycin. The combined efforts of several agencies of the federal and state governments, universities, and private industry suggest that additional therapeutants should soon be registered for use in aquaculture.
