Abstract

In this paper, my aim is to provide a partial answe r to Needham’s Grand Question, by arguing that the imperial examinations wer e ‘epistemological obstacles’ which hindered the development of modern science. I further argue that these obstacles were present in the European universities as well, after which I elucidate the role of competitive patronage in overcomin g these obstacles.
