Abstract

The experience of the imperial banks in South Africa presents us with a good example of business imperialism in operation in the half century prior to the First World War. There can be no doubt that South Africa benefited from the presence of the imperial banks. It is necessary to say this, because many myths and prejudices abound about the role of imperial business in the nineteenth century.
