Abstract

Being a Teacher is focussed on how the notion of ‘twenty-first century learning’ is playing out in a selection of New Zealand schools, and among a group of teachers and leaders in those schools. The imperative to work with digital technology in schools is a further dimension of the notion of ‘twenty-first century learning’. Significant developments in digital technology are at the centre of daily student life. Overt policies requiring teachers to implement e-Learning and to deploy digital devices in the classroom have a significant bearing on the development of their being as teachers. In this chapter, evidence of the implementation of digital technology strategies and policies (notably BYOD) at participant schools is considered. This evidence is considered critically against theoretical concerns with the influence of technology on peoples’ lives, and the relationship of people to technology.
