Abstract

Digital health technologies play a critical role in the safe, effective delivery of care across health systems. The benefits for patients can be significant; however, evidence suggests that poorly designed and implemented technologies can have unintended consequences, with downstream impacts on patient safety and the quality of care provided. Key to the success of these digital health technologies is the specialist digital health workforce, who possess the requisite skills and expertise to manage and govern the safe use of digital health tools and technologies. This chapter explores the specialist digital health workforce and its impact on healthcare safety and quality practices. Following analysis of a set of case studies from US, Australian and other health systems, we highlight the paucity of attention in this important area, and the need for healthcare organisations to acknowledge and promote the specialist skills required to use digital health safely. These cases also highlight the need for further research and evaluation in this area.
